World Time Attack wrap up

1009_003

Well the World Time Attack Challenge was a testing time for the Hi octane Racing team with intermittent 4WD issues plaguing the R34 GTR in the weeks leading up to the event and therefore limiting our test time. Whilst this made for spectacular footage as this you tube video shows it is certainly not the fastest way around the track.

The Advan/Hi Octane R32GTR was also involved in an off track excursion into the wall at over 160 km/h Eastern Creeks formidable turn one during testing a few weeks out from the event with major repairs required also limiting test time. Luckily Russell emerged from the wreck unscathed and both cars appeared at Eastern Creek raceway on the Thursday morning for a day of practice prior to the WTAC on Friday. Unfortunately as is often the case with motorsport things don’t always go to plan and both GTRs finished up requiring major repairs and neither car was able to make it to the start line on Friday morning. The R32 GTR we believe may have damaged the GT500 block in the crash weeks earlier and caused the block to split at its first full session in anger.

A new short engine was freighted from Queensland overnight and the team worked frantically to get the car back on the track. The Advan/Hi octane R34 GTR suffered head gasket failure on also putting it out for the Friday session. It is worth noting every single one of the overseas competitors suffered some sort of major mechanical issue, such is the highly stressed nature of Time Attack racing at this level. With both cars repaired on the Saturday it was down to business and with only three fifteen minute sessions there was no time for any more issues. At the end of the day Mark Berry in the Advan/Hi octane R34 GTR managed to lay down a time of 1.34.1 and putting us in 7th position outright against some of the best in the world with Russell Newman piloting the R32 to a creditable 1.38.2 and slotting into 11th place in the hotly contested Wynns Pro Class.

Hi Octane Racing would like to thank Yokohama for the ongoing support with the best semi slick tyres on the planet. One of their senior Japanese race tyre engineers also flew down to provide track support and helped us immensely with valuable setup data. Also a big thank you to the crew that worked tirelessly to make this happen. Bill, Kelvin and Steve from CNJ Motorsport, Brian Lynnette and Neil Berry, Paul Everett, Brett Charters, Ben Wooster and Phil Keable and also Turbosmart and Hypertune for their ongoing support. Also a big thank you to the fans that stopped by our garage.

We will back bigger and better next year that is for sure!
